The inspiration for this piece was the idea that all empires have a common pattern of birth, growth, golden age, decay, and eventual destruction. I started with a 3-phrase chant-like melodic idea, which works its way through various treatments, from rennaisance style counterpoint, to a grand chorale at the hight of the empire. While the brass typically represents the cultural aspect of the empire, the percussion represents the military and technological aspects; at times well-balanced in comparison to the culture, at times seeming to run amok.
