Picture without Lines
Soprano, Violin, and Piano

The text for "Picture without Lines" is based on excerpts from several Classical Japanese Haiku, combined into a slightly longer text. The piano provides a sparse, glassy texture, and the violin at times cross-fades with the voice, blending the two timbres together into longer sustained notes.



Snow-swallowed valley
Whitely falling veils

Grey water, grey sand
Grey field, unmarred by any path
Picture without lines

The winding river
A fluid black brush-stroke
