Janky Tapedeck
Solo Bass Clarinet

The overall effect of this funk-inspired miniature for bass clarinet is that of a beat-up old tape player slowly running down its batteries. Eventually, the machine really gives up the ghost, but it’s revived for one last hurrah (the player may choose to pantomime replacing a battery in the bass clarinet, or the ‘percussive maintenance’ approach).

Janky Tapedeck makes frequent use of minuscule adjustments to tempo, using an arrow notation to indicate speeding up or slowing down. These changes should be as small as possible while still being a discernible change (in the neighborhood of 4 BPM), and align with changes in the pitch center to create the combined pitch/tempo effect of a tape player with inconsistent speed.
