small
Piano Solo

The score of ‘small’ gives only the minimum instructions to the pianist, and allows for a very large degree of personal choice in interpreting and performing the piece, meaning that each performance will be unique. The idea is to explore how different two performances can be and still be recognized as the same fundamental ‘piece’.

From the performance note:

It is recommended that the sustain and soft pedals be used throughout the entire piece.
Groups of notes in parenthesis are intended to be repeated several times.
Notes or groups of notes
not in parenthesis are intended to be played once only.
Small notes are optional, and may be played or omitted; the omission of full-sized notes is not recommended.
A small note in a repeated group may be played on some repeats, but omitted on others.

Anything and everything that is not expressly notated (including dynamics, tempo, rubato, phrasing, number of times repeating each section, &c.) is left to the discretion of the performer. These choices may be made in advance, or spontaneously during performance.
