Confluence
For 5 Performers

Before performing the piece, it must be acknowledged, either verbally or in a written program, that this work is inspired by a visual artwork of Diamond Point (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm | Musqueam), which is in turn inspired by the annual Coast Salish Canoe Journeys. From the material accompanying the artwork: “Bringing to mind a group of paddlers announcing themselves before coming ashore, awaiting a welcome according to protocol, the paddles are raised in symmetrical precision. Coast Salish design elements on the paddles indicate who the travelers are and where they have come from, and are incorporated here in keeping with the teachings of Point’s ancestors.”

The symmetrical alignment of the paddles gives structure to the first and third systems, and the design of the individual paddle is mirrored in the colorful middle staff. (With yellow here representing white in the original artwork)

Confluence can be played by any five people, musicians or non-musicians; the players need only be able to produce five different notes/sounds.

The score is to be read from top to bottom, starting with the left system, then the middle staff (solo), then the right system. The lines and spaces represent 5 different notes/sounds from lowest on the left to highest on the right. The horizontal dashed lines represent a simultaneous sound onset.
All details not specified in the score (including but not limited to staging, specific pitches, tempo, rhythms, coordination of parts, interpretation of color, and how any of these elements might change over the course of the piece) are at the discretion of the players, and should be discussed and agreed upon ahead of time.

Performance Instructions:

First one person plays through the whole piece on a single part.
Next a second person joins (from elsewhere), and they play two parts together; the newest player always plays the solo (while the other players listen).
Repeat three more times, until all five people have entered; all five parts will sound together the last time through.
