Unwritten Rules
For Two Percussionists and Viola
Unwritten Rules is a pair of two short pieces based on underlying numerical rules. My aim was to create pieces where the procedural aspect of the harmonies was concealed in music that sounds freely composed, and leave the details of the underlying rule as a secret. These pieces were composed for the Triangle Trio: Aaron Graham (percussion), Julia Chien (percussion), and Sarah Kwok (viola).
“Caution! Uneven Road Ahead” is a rhythmically charged and syncopated piece consisting of variations on a repeating asymmetrical rhythm.
“Shallow Water, No Diving” is a more laid-back movement, based on two alternating harmonic patterns.
Both feature mallet percussion and drum set, and have some jazz and funk influence, especially in the drum set writing.
