it's slower here
Baritone and Piano

"it's slower here" is a song for baritone and piano setting poetry of Ashton Jack. The piano part features unmetered figures loosely coordinated with the singer, as well as writing evocative of an electronic delay effect, and harmonies that are almost familiar, but just slightly uncomfortable. This all serves to provide a window into the emotions underlying the text, which I read as an internal "coming to oneself," rather than an expression of love for another person.

it’s slower here
come stay a while
the calm reeds rustle the gentle wind blows

it’s softer here
come closer, love
the sun is setting
the night is still young

it’s pretty here
the stars alight
the pinetops shimmer into the night

it’s slower here
I’ve been a while
the calm reeds rustle the gentle wind blows
