Parce Domine
SATB and Organ
As a choral composer, there are a lot of classic latin texts to choose from when setting about writing a motet, but a great many of them have already been set by many, many other composers (think Masses, Requiems, O Magnum Mysteriums, Stabat Maters, etc.) This can make setting these texts artistically daunting (not to mention the increased difficulty in publishing and performing, since you're creating a kind of direct competition between your new piece and other established pieces). In the process of looking for overlooked texts, I came across the Parce Domine, which grabbed my attention. It's quite short compared to a lot of other traditional texts, and it gets right to the point. My setting is based on the traditional, Stile Antico, style of counterpoint (for the most part), a tradition that connects choral composers throughout history, since a great many have chosen to use this old style of writing for sacred choral music.
Parce, Domine, parce populo tuo:
ne in aeternum irascaris nobis.
Spare, Lord, spare your people:
Be not angry with us forever.
